Ok, I don't remember when I last posted something here, but it has certainly been a while (too long). I know there are people still waiting for the next Pekka Kana game to appear, so I might explain where things are at now. PK3 hasn't been in the works for years now. I guess the main reason is, that I just lost my motivation to do it. I don't make games because I want money, but just because I think it's fun and you can learn important skills while doing it. So what killed my motivation? Too high expectations for the game, for one. We (me and Jerome) tried to keep the game from getting too big so it would be possible to finish it, but eventually we got too ambitious anyway. That leads to... Lack of time. When I was making PK2, I was still studying, so I had lots of free time. But now with work, band stuff and all, I basically had only time to make PK3 on weekends, and I'm really slow, so not much progress was made. It takes me about two weekends to draw, animate and program a new character (sprite) for the game. And it might not even make it to the game if it isn't good enough. When you see a finished game, you only see the tip of the iceberg of all the work that was put in the game. There are loads of graphics, sprites, music and other stuff that never made it to PK2. Sometimes I think that the quality of the game can be measured by looking at all the stuff that was never used in the game Deluxe Paint, which I have used to create the graphics (using DosBox) is not cutting it anymore - too bound to it's 1992 limitations - allowing only 320x200 resolution for animations is pain when making bigger sprites. Platform. Finding one that can still run the game after many years is difficult. PK2 is difficult to run on modern hardware since it uses DirectX 7 and all the possible acceleration tricks used back then. Our older games run on MS-DOS and are even harder to run anymore. I didn't want that to happen to my next game. I also wanted a platform that could cover all the major operating systems with minimal work. At least when we started PK3, it was difficult to find something like that. Things have changed though. Saturation. When I started PK2 back in the days, there were not so many platformers on PC (not to mention good ones). That has changed quite a bit as they seem to be the favorite genre of indie game developers. It's hard to count all the new platforming games realeased and in the works now. Rayman Legends : D This is how I wanted PK3 to look like and to feel like. Except with more chickens... And these guys had an army of developers. With two people there is only some much you can do. So where does that leave PK3? I still have hopes of getting the game done some day. However, continuing the work on PK3 would mean starting from scratch with modern computers in mind. The increasing performance of the browser and technologies like HTML5 and WebGL (it's event possible to use XBox360 controller in a browser) make it a very appealing candidate for a new PK game. I'm also working on a paint software of my own, that hopefully will replace Deluxe Paint and frees me from it's limitations... But all in all, don't hold your breath while waiting for PK3. If it's going to come out, it's going to be a long time... but hey - Duke Nukem Forever came out eventually, so everything is possible Meanwhile - try out Rayman Legends if you already haven't - that's what I'm playing It's seriously good, no one pays me for saying that. Also, I'm working on another game currently - of which you will hear more about later.

Whoa, you're alive. I hope you will be posting more often now (and make The Evil One a moderator, since we don't want any more diet pills incidents, do we?). Thanks for letting us know that you are alive, and also working on something new About PK2, I hope that, at some point, we get to port it on modern platforms. Once in a while, I think about palette-based surface emulation thingies and look at the PK2 source, piotrulos and pasquiindustry and others are also working on PK2-related things. So one day, we might enjoy it once more, on different platforms.

Well, it has really been a while, hasn't it? As RavMahov pointed out, there are attempts to modernize PK2. We will see what happens with those... And we really do need a moderator in case of a bot rampage. I can say it is good to hear from you, after, what, five years? Btw, is there another band besides Pässilauma?

Nice to see you after many months. (Actually 5 years) PK2 was a legend. And I still play it.... It's never gone for me. Thanks Janne, for making PK2 and making a final decision towards PK3.

Has it been 5 years? What can I say, I suck at communication. I'm pretty amazed by the fact that there is still life in these forums. And it's nice to see you guys are actually doing stuff like the PK2Lib, remixes of the songs, and remakes of the actual game. Very impressive stuff. Hopefully you have had good fun making those and learned useful stuff. I mean, I learned programming while making games like PK2 (the source being horrible mess of a code when I look at it now) because no one would make those games for me. And now I use those skills in my job today. Anyways, as suggested I've given The Evil One moderator rights. Use your new powers wisely ; ) Oh, and if anyone is interested, I play drums in band called Superfall. I just got our web site up - might be bit buggy still... Nothing PisteGamez related there though... I've spent the last half a year mixing and mastering our first album.

We were trying hard And it's nice to see you guys are actually doing stuff like the PK2Lib, remixes of the songs, and remakes of the actual game. Very impressive stuff. Thank you, we've got some great talents here. There is still much work to do, though. (the source being horrible mess of a code when I look at it now) You know, I've actually found buffer overflow in one place so far (when loading bitmaps, I think, the file-extension buffer is four chars long, and you used the [4] index. Not sure if it affects anything, though. We will see later. Anyways, as suggested I've given The Evil One moderator rights. Use your new powers wisely ; ) That's great! Though, we seriously hope that you won't be leaving us again... for too long Oh, and if anyone is interested, I play drums in band called Superfall. It's not tracker music, but still good

Sorry for the long post, I put all of my comments about what piqued my interest in this thread into 1 long post. Ok, I don't remember when I last posted something here, but it has certainly been a while (too long). I know there are people still waiting for the next Pekka Kana game to appear, so I might explain where things are at now. ... It's awesome that we're finally informed about the situation. It's always good to know rather than to be left wondering. So where does that leave PK3? I still have hopes of getting the game done some day. However, continuing the work on PK3 would mean starting from scratch with modern computers in mind. The increasing performance of the browser and technologies like HTML5 and WebGL (it's event possible to use XBox360 controller in a browser) make it a very appealing candidate for a new PK game. ... But all in all, don't hold your breath while waiting for PK3. If it's going to come out, it's going to be a long time... but hey - Duke Nukem Forever came out eventually, so everything is possible. That's good to know. I'd personally recommend a native game rather than a browser one (native games still have better performance than browser games but browser games with HTML5 + WebGL + etc. work on more (modern) devices; also, native games are more difficult to code if one's aiming at releasing the game for more platforms (e.g. Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Android, etc.) - despite the fact that quite a lot of cross-platform/multiplatform-oriented IDEs and libraries have been released in the last 5 years), but it's ultimately up to you guys, so I don't mind. I guess that this means that Pekka Kana 3 could be described as "development ceased / on hold for an indefinite amount of time because a complete project restart from scratch is planned for the (not-so-near) future" (I hope that the latter option plays out). I'm also working on a paint software of my own, that hopefully will replace Deluxe Paint and frees me from it's limitations... That's very interesting! I myself have some ideas about what end-users desire from an image editing and painting software (especially if it's mainly used for creating pixel art images) and I'm willing to share them with you if you're interested. Drop me an email about this if you're looking for alpha/beta testers and suggestions for your new software. My email address is in my forum signature. Meanwhile - try out Rayman Legends if you already haven't - that's what I'm playing It's seriously good, no one pays me for saying that. Rayman Legends looks cool, I'll consider buying at some point in the not-so-distant future. Also, I'm working on another game currently - of which you will hear more about later. Wonderful! It's a good idea to release information about your new game project when you have more of it to show. You may even consider starting a (Tumblr?) dev(b)log about that project to crank up the hype.
Thank God you said something finally! It was such a long time... Indeed, it's great that we finally got information about PK3's situation and the (current lack of) development thereof.
Ahem... So really sad to see Pekka Kana 3 is dead, but I will try out Rayman Legends. All isn't lost. Janne didn't say 'dead', Janne said 'I may make PK3 (with the rest of the PisteGamez people) in the future by starting from scratch'. As long as the developers are alive and healthy and the PisteGamez fanbase (though small, it's indeed quite dedicated) is active, any PisteGamez game project can be resurrected/resumed/(re)started, including PK3.
I'm pretty amazed by the fact that there is still life in these forums. We were trying hard We still are, somewhat.

I sure learned quite a lot from that (and I still occasionally learn more from it), yes, thank you (along with the rest of the PisteGamez team) for providing us with that possibility. Superfall seems awesome, I made sure to subscribe to Superfall's Twitter profile and YouTube channel. Here are 3 small and innocent suggestions: 1. You can embed the band's Twitter timeline in the official website of the band that you made. That would be quite convenient. Check Twitter's Help pages for more information about how to do it. 2. If your band is aiming at a more international audience, I'd recommend writing your Facebook posts in both Finnish and English (i.e. the same text in 2 languages, Finnish being the primary one, of course). 3. If you're accepting ideas for song lyrics, I may be interested in writing some song lyrics for you. Have a look at my dreadful work on deviantART if you're interested. I wish you much fame and good fortune with this band and all of your other endeavors!
Anyways, as suggested I've given The Evil One moderator rights. Use your new powers wisely ; ) That's great! Though, we seriously hope that you won't be leaving us again... for too long I salute the giving of a moderator rank to The Evil One (TEO, Crudelis Diabolus) - he already does a good job with PK2Lib and it's always great to have a moderator to delete excessive spam from the forums. Maybe Janne himself and/or the rest of the PisteGamez gang can be more active in the PisteGamez blog, or maybe Janne should consider starting a blog of his own (tumblr, WordPress and Blogspot are all good options, but a self-hosted blog+website combination is also nice) - you know, to keeps us updated on any and all of his projects. If Janne has a Twitter profile, I'd definitely follow him (BTW, twitter.com/pekkakana2 seems like an abandoned fake PK2 'official' Twitter profile! ).

About the moderating rights: it seems that I don't actually have any forum- or topic-related ones (but I do seem to have the power to ban people ). And I think this is probably due to the fact that the moderator group hasn't been assigned to moderate anywhere (when you take a look at the front page, you can see that in every category/subforum it only says "Moderator: Janne Kivilahti").

Kiolp suggests to make Pekka Kana 3D Anyway, good to see you again. I think your presence will increase activity on that forum a bit. I recommend you to try the new levels that were made (especially my levels xD ; with my brother we made more than 300 levels to pk2) or at least watch lets plays: www.youtube.com/user/marqxdtczPL/playlists?sort=dd&view=1
