Weird to make a review after so much time this game has been out, but considering how few threads there are on Duckface and how this game just rocks I feel like it really earns some words, even if it took me so long to realise it
.
Well, what can I say? Duckface is amazing. Gameplay is solid and easy to figure out, the idea of everything being "blocky" but with varying sizes is an interesting take on sprites and makes for a lot more variety of features, the aesthetic and comedy tone of the game is very consistent through the whole game, visually the game is simple but pretty, and just like said earlier everything is very consistent, the background, characters, items, they all "fit" into each other.
The sound design is also amazing, sound effects match the cartoony feel of the game as well as the really cool and enjoyable songs that play on each level. The level design is also solid, with earlier levels teaching effectively what the player can and can't do (like walking by spikes), and later levels throwing harder puzzles at the player to make them think a bit harder. All of that coupled with the fact this game supports custom level creation and it's a masterpiece by it's own rights.
But I wouldn't say this game is absolutely perfect. A few of the jokes might fall flat, and especially the one when you die "Oh, duck" turning into "Oh, f***", although funny at first it is a pretty edgy joke that some people might not like. Another thing is that many levels are based upon "if you do things in the wrong order you lose", which I have no issues with but it does make a few of them pretty repetitive and that can get boring. Lastly, the game is just too small scoped, as in it's just one more of those games that are very fun and you play sometimes but you don't see yourself really focusing on making a huge episode on it with many large levels or anything of that nature (like Pekka Kana 2), which is not really an issue and is probably made by design, but I must mention because it's possible some fans of Pekka Kana 2 will come to it thinking this is some kind of "spiritual successor" to Pekka Kana 2 and it will retain many design choices, and that is definetely not the case, even though they both have farm birds as their protagonists and are both 2d platformers, they are VERY different games.
Overall that is all I have to say about this game and I REALLY recommend you check it out!
